In a move that seemingly makes ChatGPT a one-stop solution for everything one might need on the internet, OpenAI is integrating third-party apps into the chatbot, as announced by the developer at its recent DevDay event.
Users will be able to use and interact with the apps incorporated into ChatGPT directly through the chatbot.
To serve the purpose of supporting third-party apps, the ChatGPT maker has launched an app development kit, allowing developers to develop customised apps specifically for ChatGPT.
How do third-pary apps in ChatGPT actually work?
For instance, if a user mentions Spotify, they can easily connect to the music streaming service and share data. The interesting side of this initiative is that users will also be able to then converse with Spotify through ChatGPT, using prompts like, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party on Friday.”
In the same manner, users connecting to the real estate app Zillow can request specific property types that better align with their budget, and then view an interactive map of listings within ChatGPT.
This multi-platform support comes on the heels of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announcing that ChatGPT has gained 800 million weekly users, a significant uptick from 700 million in August.
The CEO remarked that the new app store “will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalised — that you can chat with.”
Where to access apps in ChatGPT?
It's worth noting that while they haven't been rolled out on a full scale, OpenAI rolled out GPT's third-party app feature to all logged-in users outside the EU, including those on free and paid plans.
The launch includes partnerships with popular platforms such as Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Booking.com, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow, with more apps —such as Target and Uber— following suit later in 2025.
