With the aim of reducing the province's carbon footprint and normalising sustainable public transport, the Punjab government has announced to launch an electric bus service in Wazirabad on September 17, 2025.

Coming on the heels of the recent launch of the Green Electric Bus Service in Mianwali, the electric bus service in Wazirabad marks the city’s inaugural step towards eco-friendly public mobility.

This initiative will operate 15 electric buses on major routes within Wazirabad in the first phase, which the authorities project will benefit nearly 100,000 commuters daily.

The estimated daily ridership of 100,000 passengers indicates the significant impact this bus service could have on urban mobility.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the project is intended to expand gradually throughout Punjab to ensure that more districts have access to modern and sustainable transport solutions.

Nevertheless, a major concern is whether Punjab’s electric bus network would evolve into the backbone of affordable, green urban travel, or will end up lagging behind the likes of sustainable urban mobility projects swarming Punjab.
