Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a major relief for the flood-affected victims across Pakistan, directing electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to immediately stop collecting August electricity bills, ensuring that families impacted by the devastating floods get some respite from their financial burdens.
During a high-level meeting, chaired by the prime minister, the decision was made to ensure that families impacted by the devastating floods get some respite from their financial burdens.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari confirmed that, according to the electricity bill relief, all bills for August 2025 have been waived for residents in flood-affected areas.
Notably, bills will be adjusted in the upcoming billing cycle for those who have already paid. Authorities have instructed the division to ensure the rapid implementation of this directive.
The prime minister highlighted that a full support package will be announced once negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are finalised.
Pakistan's authorities formally requested the IMF to allow a three-month deferment of electricity bills, citing precedent set in 2022 where similar relief was provided to flood-affected areas.
During the meeting, the prime minister said: “The floods have shocked millions across Pakistan. We are dedicated to providing ease to their burden and will not rest until every affected family gets back to their home.”
Leghari added that federal and provincial agencies are tirelessly busy in rescue and restoration efforts.
“The Power Division will ensure immediate implementation of the prime minister’s directive,” Leghari said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to give relief to citizens facing hardships due to floods.
He also noted that up to 70% of electricity bill relief is already being provided to 18 million consumers nationwide.
With this major relief package, the federal government aims to support flood-impacted communities during this crisis.
