In an alarming development, Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is facing a major setback as global installs on Android have dropped significantly.

According to recent data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, downloads from the Google Play Store declined 44% year-over-year as of July 2025.

Overall mobile downloads also fell 26% in the same period, highlighting a concerning trend for the company.

In sharp contrast, X’s iOS app continues to perform well, recording a 15% increase in installs and even setting a record week for new downloads.

The divide between platforms appears to be tied to persistent problems with the Android version, which has long been criticized for its instability, frequent crashes, and poor user experience.

Acknowledging the challenges, X’s recently appointed Head of Product, Nikita Bier, announced the formation of an “Android Dream Team” to overhaul the app.

Bier stressed that while iOS performance remains strong, restoring Android user confidence is now a top priority for the company.

The subscription income of X is also being impacted by the drop in Android installs. The platform's July net revenue was $16.9 million, down from $18.8 million in March.

Although this represents a slight increase over June’s $16.8 million, the broader downward trend raises concerns about user retention and subscription income.
