Google Calendar receives dark mode and revamped Material Design 3

Google Calendar dark mode feature rolls out to Google Workspace customers and Rapid Release domains

Google Calendar on Wednesday, received the highly anticipated dark mode feature on the web with a revamped Material Design 3 in the latest update. The newly introduced feature will protect you from eye straining and includes several significant advancements.

It has the ability to toggle between light mode and dark mode, and set Calendar to match your device’s theme. Google Calendar also features updated iconography, typography, and more advanced and accessible buttons.

This recent update is part of an enhanced refresh of all Google apps to align them with Google Material Design 3 standard and offers a revamped look, making the app easier to use in different environments.

The latest Google Calendar update for the web has more controls, so from onwards, whenever users tap the Settings gear icon, an advanced and minimalist drop-down menu will appear where you can select the Settings, trash, density, and more.

Iconography has become more appealing and crisp. Moreover, Alphabet-owned Google has used light grey coloured tint dialogue boxes everywhere which provides a cleaner and refreshed look. 

How to enable dark mode in Google Calendar on web

Follow these steps to enable dark mode:

  1. Firstly, tap the Settings icon, on the top right corner of the Google Calendar. 
  2. Select Appearance and choose your preferred mode from Light, Dark, or Device default.

It is important to note that this setting will impact your Google Tasks, which has now become a part of the entire Calendar web experience. Furthermore, if you are accessing Tasks via tasks.google.com, only then you will receive the refreshed interface. 

Google Workspace customers and Rapid Release domains have already started to receive the dark mode feature in Google Calendar, while it will be rolled out to Schedule Release domains from December 2.
