Google is rolling out a new feature for Live Caption, allowing users to set a transparent background instead of the previously required solid one. This update is currently available on newer Pixel devices and is expected to expand to other Android smartphones soon.
Captions have become an essential tool for many users, improving accessibility and enhancing media consumption. Whether for people with hearing impairments, those watching videos in noisy environments, or users who prefer reading along, real-time captions offer a more inclusive and convenient experience.
Live Caption gets visual upgrade
Live Caption is a useful accessibility feature that automatically generates real-time captions for any media played on a smartphone. While users could previously adjust placement, font size, and colour, background customisation was limited.
Recently, with the latest Android System Intelligence V.17 update, Google has added a “Background transparency” option, improving readability without blocking content on the screen.
Who can access this Live Caption update?
Google's latest Live Caption Transparency feature is rolling out to select Pixel models. Other Android phones that support Live Caption might receive the update later.
Users can check if they have access by heading to Live Caption settings, where the new “Background transparency” toggle will appear.
Google has been enhancing Live Caption with new features, including Expressive Captions, which was introduced last month. While Google has not confirmed a release date for other devices, the update is expected to roll out more widely in the coming months.
