Google Maps' mobile app experienced a widespread outage that prevented it from loading maps or giving users directions.

As a result of the interruption, which started earlier today, over 4,000 reports were made on Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages.

Google's engineering team was looking into a problem with the Maps SDK and Navigation SDK, according to the company's Status Dashboard, which acknowledged the issue.

Both iOS and Android versions of the app were impacted by the outage, and some users saw an error message saying that the service "cannot reach server".

Interestingly, Google Maps' web version continued to function during the outage.

Google's dashboard offered regular updates throughout the outage, including confirmation of mitigation efforts and signs of recovery.

The company stated at 5:22pm ET that "mitigation work is currently underway" and that it was "seeing indications of recovery."

Google said the problem was partially fixed about half an hour later, but they did not say when it would be fixed completely.

Moreover, apologle promised to release a thorough analysis of the incident after its internal investigation was finished, and the outage was finally fixed by 6:27pm ET.

This disturbance follows a significant Google Cloud outage in June that had a significant impact on a number of services, including Snapchat and Spotify.

It is unknown exactly what caused the Google Maps outage and what steps were taken to fix it.
