Google Maps is set to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America”, but only for users in the United States (US).
This decision comes days after the US administration's Interior Department officially changed the name.
"As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America's highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," the Interior Department’s statement reads.
US President Donald Trump also ordered to change the name of Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley.
The Alphabet-owned company is expected to update Google Maps once the US Geographic Names System reflects this change.
Notably, the name will remain "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico; however, users outside of the US and Mexico will see both names listed on Google Maps.
It’s worth mentioning that this move is part of Google's locale-based labelling system, which aims to accommodate different naming conventions used by various countries.
For instance, the body of water between Japan and South Korea is listed as the "Sea of Japan (East Sea)" on Google Maps.
