Google Meet may soon discontinue its support for Android TV and Google TV. Launched in 2020, the app allowed users to make video calls on their TV screens using a webcam.

However, recent code updates suggest that Google plans to shut down the app, leaving users searching for alternatives.

Google Meet on Android TV and Google TV

First launched as Duo, Google Meet extended its availability to Android TV OS when the pandemic was raging. Through the app, users were enabled to join video calls on their TV screens, providing a convenient and immersive way of enjoying a video call. However, it appears that Google is ending this option soon.

The latest update for Google Meet on Android TV and Google TV comes along with code that reveals its possible eventual shutdown.

The notice reads, "Soon you won't be able to make calls with Google Meet on your Android TV. Tap below for alternatives and to learn more." This notice is not alive yet, but the presence of such messages is what Google is preparing for.

Google Meet recently removed support for Samsung TVs back in March. However, the company now seems to be repeating the same on its very own website, and Google TV has only recently added Call Notifications in late last year.

The shutdown will mean that those users of Google Meet who use their video calls on TV screens will be unable to continue doing so. To continue using this feature, the users shall have to look elsewhere to video conferencing sites. Options include

  • Zoom
  • Skype
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Cisco Webex

The users of Google Meet and Android TV along with those of Google TV are going to be annoyed with this cancellation.

Yet, there are several alternatives which can make their transition easier.
