Google Messages has introduced a new “Profile sharing” feature, providing users more control over how they appear to their contacts.

Previously, the messaging app offered Profile discovery which had the option to customise their profiles within the app but it was limited.

The new update, now offers an option to manage profile pictures and display names that appear during conversations.

When a user opens Google Messages, an option appears on the screen as “Customise how you are seen.” Tapping it navigates to the “Your profile” page, where users can edit their name and profile picture.

The update also introduces a new “Show name and picture to” option for users to get control over who gets to see their profile information.

This “Show name and picture” includes three options:

  • People you message: Your profile is visible to people you exchange messages with.
  • Your contacts: Your profile is visible to people whose contacts are saved in your phone’s contact list.
  • No one: Your profile and name isn’t visible to anyone even after you send a message.

This new “Your profile” update is rolling out gradually and will be available to more users in the upcoming weeks.
