After months of speculation and rumours, Google Pay is finally confirmed to launch in Pakistan by mid-March 2025.

According to ProPakistani, Google Pay’s launch was initially slated for November 2024, but was delayed. The rollout is expected to be facilitated through synergistic partnerships with Visa and Mastercard. Additionally, local banks anticipate enabling their cards to be compatible with this innovative feature.

Although Google Wallet offers a comprehensive suite of features, this app version will be specifically tailored to enable Google’s contactless payment system across the country. Through the Google Wallet app, users can easily connect their bank-issued debit and credit cards to Google Pay.

The adapted Google Wallet app will also be customised for the Pakistani market, allowing users to manage payments, digital passes, boarding passes, and other features. This is certainly a significant step toward promoting a contactless payment system nationwide.

Necessary measures are already ongoing, with up to four to six leading banks partnering with Visa and Mastercard to fulfill the technical requirements for the service. Meanwhile, all the leading banks across Pakistan are eagerly anticipating its launch to leverage its potential.

Pakistan’s payment infrastructure is already well-prepared for the release. Among the 133,000 point-of-sale terminals currently operational in the country, nearly 99% are compatible with mobile contactless payment systems.
