Google's Gemini app is rolling out a "Temporary Chat" feature for users seeking more secure and private chats. The feature will be released over the next few days on Android, iOS, and the web.

Gemini is Google's AI conversational assistant designed to be able to assist users in a variety of tasks, questions, content generation, etc. With the new update, Google is trying to give users further control over their history and privacy.

To initiate a temporary chat, simply head to the Gemini app or website. Look for the new circular-dashed bubble icon next to "New Chat" in the search bar. Tap the icon, and the app will go into "Temporary Chat" mode.

Temporary Chats are a completely new chat function made to be private and will NOT show up in your "Recent Chats" or in your Gemini App Activity.

Google notes that temporary chats are only stored for 72 hours to help with maintaining a safe and seamless experience. Google also emphasised that Temporary Chats would NOT be used to train AI models nor to personalise your future responses.

Some features don’t work in Temporary Chat:

  • You can’t use Gems (custom AI helpers).
  • Connected apps and personalised responses are turned off.
  • You can’t save info or give feedback.

This mode is only available for personal accounts, not school or work users.
