Google is transforming smart displays by bringing Gemini AI features to Google TV. While earlier devices like the Nest Hub focused on touch control, the latest shift integrates artificial intellignce (AI)-powered smart home controls into bigger screens.
Previously, Google introduced the Pixel Tablet, which worked like a dockable Nest Hub. However, the company is now taking a new direction.
Additionally, Google TV will feature an ambient mode that displays useful widgets for weather, calendar, photos, and security feeds.
Proximity sensors will detect when someone is near and automatically show relevant information. This major upgrade over traditional smart displays provides a larger screen and better visuals for smart home data and AI-powered responses.
Future Google TV models will also come with far-field microphones, allowing users to control devices and interact with Gemini AI without a remote.
Moreover, the new Google Assistant will offer conversational responses and even suggest YouTube videos based on queries. This makes Google TV more interactive and improves content discovery.
Even with these advances, Google TV will not entirely displace smart displays. It lacks touch controls, which makes it more difficult to rapidly adjust smart home settings. Compact Nest Hub-style displays are also cheaper and easier to set up around the house.
