After the rumours earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government has officially launched a new app, “PowerSmartApp,” under the initiative of “Apna Meter, Apni Reading,” which improves accuracy in electricity billing and reduces overbilling.
The relevant officials revealed that the app allows consumers to submit meter readings by uploading a photo on a set date, which will then be used to generate their bill.
If both the consumer and meter reader submit readings, the lower reading will be accepted. To note, the consumer is required to submit their meter's reading on time, any later reading will be ignored.
The app is available in five languages, such as English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtu, and Balochi, ensuring accessibility for consumers across various regions.
Power Minister Awais Leghari said the app would facilitate curb overbilling and reduce complaints by giving consumers more control over the meter reading process.
The prime minister has directed nationwide implementation of the app and announced the abolition of the Rs35 PTV fee from electricity bills.
He said Pakistan loses Rs500 billion annually to power theft and emphasised ongoing reforms in the power sector, including changes to DISCO boards, merit-based appointments, and steps to resolve circular debt.
Currently, with the impending meter reading app, the government seems to be empowering users to take control.
