The overuse of mobile phones by children is increasingly becoming a concern for parents, teachers, and health professionals in Pakistan.
With the prevalence of smartphones and tablets, children are spending more time on screens, raising serious concerns about their physical and mental well-being.
Why mobile screen time is problem?
Parents in Pakistan say that children spend a lot of time each day playing video and computer games, watching videos, and texting friends on their cell phones. Too much screen time is causing health issues such as sleep loss, eye strain, and decreased attention spans.
One of the mothers of a 10-year-old, Sabrena, expressed her concern regarding her child's addiction to the phone. She stated: "I have noticed a significant change in my child’s behaviour since they started using a smartphone. They are always glued to the screen, which is affecting their mood, grades, and overall health."
She continued that children have become irretrievably attached to their devices, even during meal times or when spending time with family. "I feel like I have lost control over my child’s phone use. Their school performance is suffering, and I don’t know how to limit their screen time."
Health risks of excessive mobile use
Health experts in Pakistan warn that too much mobile phone use can lead to obesity, reduced physical activity, and impaired cognitive development.
Paediatrician Saira Jabeen stressed the importance of balance, saying, “Children need a mix of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation for healthy growth. Excessive screen time disrupts this balance and harms their well-being.”
She recommended that parents restrict screen time to 1-2 hours a day and support outdoor games and sports to enhance physical activity and teamwork.
Monitoring mobile phone use, establishing limits, and supporting social interaction can assist children in acquiring the necessary communication skills and emotional intelligence.
