In a jaw-dropping turn of events, tech giant Apple has announced that it has sold 3 billion iPhones since the handset's inception in 2007, marking a noteworthy accomplishment in the company's history.

Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed that this achievement was made in the third quarter of 2025. Over time, the Cupertino-based tech giant has seen a remarkable surge in iPhone sales.

The Apple higher-up said it took the company around a decade to reach the milestone of selling one billion iPhones, which was accomplished in July of 2016.

Five years down the road, the company sold its next billion of iPhone units in September 2021, and now the latest and third billion of its total iPhone sales has been brought about in less than four years, which shows a remarkable increase in Apple's sales pace.

Cook attributed the company's success to the iPhone's ongoing appeal and hold on the global smartphone market, while highlighting how important Apple Intelligence is to the company's growth as it plots its future.

Interestingly, iPhone sales increased 13% year over year in the third quarter, bringing in $44.6 billion, or almost half of Apple's $94 billion in revenue for the quarter.

In order to further establish the iPhone as a leading AI platform, the company intends to expand third-party AI offerings and roll out more advanced AI features, such as an enhanced Siri.

"Apple Intelligence will be what takes the iPhone to 4 billion," Cook said, implying that the company might accomplish this feat in less than three years. With Apple Intelligence driving the company's efforts, it is conceivable that the company will reach 4 billion iPhone sales by 2028.

Apple Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak was excited about the achievement, saying: "3 billion iPhones sold! I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has made the iPhone such a significant part of their lives. I'm really looking forward to what lies ahead."

The development positioned Apple to maintain its growth trajectory and innovation in the smartphone market, which is largely driven by its strong ecosystem integration and dedication to safe AI solutions.
