Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has disclosed that Instagram's monthy active users have grown to 3 billion, a remarkable milestone that highlights Instagram's position as one of the most popular social media apps globally.

The last time Meta shared its user base was in 2022 when Zuckerberg revealed that Instagram had surpassed 2 billion monthly active users.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, acquired Instagram for $1 billion back in 2012. The acquisitiona gained massive traction since the app initially focused only on photo-sharing with no clear revenue model in place. Since then, the photo and video-sharing platform has thrived phenomenally. Estimates have it that it will contribute more than half of Meta's ad revenue in the US this year.

The biggest driver of Instagram's success is the Reels feature, introduced in 2020, which enables users to create engaging short-form videos. The feature has established as a formidable challenger for rivals like TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

TikTok, owned by the Chinese tech giant ByteDance, boasts over 1 billion monthly active users, as claimed by a company spokesperson earlier this month.

As the social media landscape is becoming more competitive than before, Instagram's innovations are key to maintaining its user base and revenue growth.
