How to use Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum during call on iPhone and iPad

Apple has introduced two innovative audio features with the latest iOS update — Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum — which significantly enhance your calling experience.

Voice Isolation focuses on your voice by blocking out background noise, while Wide Spectrum captures a broader range of sounds, creating a more immersive call environment.

Compatibility requirements:

To use Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum during a FaceTime audio or video call, ensure your device meets the following criteria:

  • iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later
  • iPad (8th generation) and later
  • All iPad Pro 11-inch models
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later
  • iPad Air (3rd generation) and later
  • iPad mini (5th generation) and later

Wide Spectrum is currently not available for regular phone calls. However, to use Voice Isolation during a phone call, your device needs iOS 16.4 or later.

With iOS 15 or later, Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum are also compatible with select third-party apps.

Here’s how to activate these features on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Check your device and iOS version.
  2. Start a FaceTime audio, video call or phone call.
  3. Tap the 'Audio' or 'Speaker' icon.
  4. Select 'Voice Isolation' or 'Wide Spectrum.'
  5. Choose the desired audio option from the menu that includes, Voice Isolation (reduces background noise) and Wide Spectrum (picks up a broader range of sounds).
  6. Toggle between Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum to find the best audio setting for your call.
