Stargazers around Pakistan are in for a treat as a total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon, is going to light up the sky on the night of September 7 to 8, 2025.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that the blood moon will be visible from all over Pakistan and in parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas.
What is Blood Moon?
The phenomenon occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, resulting in a shadow that darkens the Moon temporarily.
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon is seen to be reddish or "bloody", hence the name Blood Moon, as the sunlight is scattered through the Earth's atmosphere, where red light passes while blue wavelengths scatter.
When to watch Blood Moon in Pakistan?
The eclipse is set to begin with the moon being dimmed at 8:28pm (PST) on September 7. That is when a partial eclipse will begin at 9:27pm, and a total eclipse will begin at 10:31pm. The maximum eclipse will occur at 11:12pm and the total phase will end at 11:53pm. The partial eclipse will end at 12:57am followed by the event concluding completely on September 8 at 1:55am.
People in Asia, including India and China, as well as the eastern edge of Africa and western Australia, will also have the best viewing conditions. The total lunar eclipse will last from 17:30 GMT to 18:52 GMT.
The last total lunar eclipse was in March 2025, and the next one will take place in 2026, followed by a rare total solar eclipse in Europe on August 12, 2026.
