Skywatchers will be in for a treat on September 7, 2025. As the second and last total lunar eclipse of 2025, a remarkable "blood moon" will light up the sky during the night.
The total lunar eclipse will be visible across Asia, Africa, and Australia, but unfortunately, anyone in the Americas will only be able to watch online live streams.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon and casts its shadow on the surface of the Moon. The Moon will not just disappear into pitch black but will turn a deep red, a natural phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering.
Even though sunlight appears white, it consists of different colours with different wavelengths. When it is an eclipse, it is the shorter wavelengths (like blue light) that scatter outward and the longer red wavelengths that bend to project onto the Moon. The end result is that the moon gets illuminated with reddish flames, or a blood moon.
The first total lunar eclipse of 2025 was in March and largely visible in the United States. There will be one difference this time. People in Asia, along with central and eastern Africa and Australia, will have the best views of the red moon during the totality phase when the moon is entirely in the Earth's shadow.
For those in the Americas, the event will not be visible directly in the sky. Instead, astronomy platforms and websites like Timeanddate.com will offer live streams, ensuring that no one misses out on the rare spectacle.
