The Hyderabad Traffic Police have implemented a 700% increase in fines for various traffic infractions as part of a bold effort to strengthen traffic discipline.

The provincial traffic department is expected to fully implement the updated penalty structure within a week, in line with recent measures executed in Karachi.

The fine for driving without a valid license has increased from Rs2,500 to Rs20,000 under the new schedule.

The fine for motorcycle riders who are caught without helmets has increased from Rs500 to Rs5,000, and the fine for no-parking infractions has increased from Rs2,000 to Rs10,000.

The penalty for speeding has increased from Rs2,500 to Rs25,000. There is also a Rs25,000 penalty for breaking one-way traffic laws, and Rs5,000 for driving without a license plate.

The steep hikes are intended to increase road safety and lower accident rates, police officials stressed.

The department said, "The new fine structure has been enforced to ensure road safety and promote respect for traffic laws," emphasising the need for responsible behaviour and adherence to the law.

Simple challans will be issued by traffic officers at first, but an e-challan system with all required data already transferred is scheduled to launch shortly.

The public has been informed through a citywide publicity campaign that includes banners.

The ruling is in line with similar actions taken in Karachi and is part of a larger initiative to improve traffic control and reduce careless driving in Hyderabad.

Officials cautioned that noncompliance may result in additional sanctions, the blacklisting of a vehicle, or its confiscation.
