In a significant development for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the Privatisation Commission Board has approved the inclusion of AKD Group Holdings (Pvt.) Ltd in the consortium of bidders led by Arif Habib Corporation Limited (AHCL).

The decision was brought to light during the commission’s 242nd meeting, bolstering the consortium's position among the four pre-qualified bidders competing to acquire a major stake in the PIA.

The inclusion of AKD Group among potential PIA buyers is expected to enhance the consortium's financial and technical capabilities, bringing the PIA privatisation in line with the Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) guidelines.

The move is part of the government's bigger plan to restructure and privatise PIA in a bid to restore operational efficiency and curtail fiscal pressures on the national flag carrier.

It must be noted that privatisation is crucial for the profitless PIA, which has been reeling with challenges.

While this step is viewed as a milestone in efforts to secure a fruitful future for Pakistan's national airline, reflecting the government's commitment to improving the airline's performance and reducing its financial burdens.
