Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to re-share any publicly posted Story to their own Stories feed. The update gives people more ways to amplify creators’ posts, making it easier to boost visibility for Story content across the platform.
Previously, users could only share Stories in which they were tagged. With the new option, anyone can re-share a Story from a public account, with Instagram automatically crediting the original creator.
Instagram's new re-share public stories feature
The feature works much like reposting but is designed specifically for Stories, expanding Instagram’s existing re-share tools for Reels and feed posts introduced earlier this year.
Instagram says the update is designed to support original creators by providing credit where due. It's also a tactic to encourage users not to screenshot and re-upload Stories sans attribution, as the process for re-sharing is now far easier.
It also helps to enforce Instagram's broader push to limit the reach of aggregator accounts that post others' content without permission.
The company says highlighting original creators will incentivise them to post more frequently, which is key to its engagement.
Only a limited people on social media actually post content, while the rest simply scroll and consume. As more people head into private messaging and out of public posting, Instagram is attempting to keep creators motivated by giving them more opportunities for reach and recognition.
The update also opens up new opportunities for brands, who will now benefit should users choose to re-share their Stories. Though some misuse of the feature is inevitable, Instagram seems sure that the addition won't overwhelm users' feeds.
The new re-share option for public Stories is now going live globally.
