Instagram is changing how your photos appear, and that’s great news for mobile photographers.

The platform now supports photos in a 3:4 aspect ratio, meaning that all of your vertical photos that you snapped on your phone will be displayed exactly as captured, with no cropping.

The announcement was made on Threads by the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, on which he noted that most phone cameras take photos by default in a 3:4 aspect ratio.

Previously, users could upload photos in a 4:5 aspect ratio or as squares, which led to a lot of cropping of edges or having resized images that reflected no resemblance to what was originally snapped.

With this update, Instagram photos are going to look a little bit more natural, specifically vertical pictures. If you’re sharing a single picture or using a carousel, your 3:4 aspect ratio photos will show in their entirety and all of the details you captured.

This new feature update comes just a few months after Instagram changed the profile grid to include rectangular previews instead of only square previews.

“Most of what’s uploaded, both photos and videos, are vertical in their orientation,” Mosseri had noted earlier this year.

You can still post square or 4:5 images if you prefer, but with 3:4 now supported, users have more freedom to post without edits or resizing.
