Instagram is simplifying its platform by removing the Notes feature, which allowed users to leave temporary, semi-private comments on posts and Reels. The feature, introduced less than a year ago, failed to gain widespread popularity.
Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri announced the decision, stating that the platform has become “too complicated”. By removing underused features, Instagram aims to streamline its user experience and focus on what people engage with the most.
Instagram's Notes feature
The Notes feature was intended to allow users to share short-lived thoughts or updates in direct messages. Unlike normal comments, the notes vanished after some time and were only accessible to chosen followers. The feature did not gain sufficient interest, and Instagram dropped it.
The company has been undertaking this move within a wider strategy of making the platform better in recent months. It has conducted tests and introductions for many updates, from algorithm tweaks to improvements to Reels and upgraded content creation tools. Instagram does this to eliminate features that aren't widely used so the application is simpler to use and is more efficient.
Instagram users can still engage with posts and Reels using normal comments, likes, and direct messages. Although Notes will no longer be accessible, the platform is still looking for new ways to enrich social interactions.
