A memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in research innovation, technology sharing, and vocational training has been signed by the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) and Pardis Technology Park in Iran.
This is a major step in strengthening scientific cooperation. The deal was signed during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's two-day visit to Pakistan, which began on August 2.
The MOU provides a framework for collaboration in a number of important fields, such as advanced materials engineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology, environmental protection technologies, industrial and manufacturing technologies, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medicinal plants, medical equipment, energy, and renewable energy sources.
The agreement also prioritises the development of innovation acceleration centres, tech hubs, start-ups, and science and technology parks, as well as the encouragement of venture capital and entrepreneurship.
This development expands on earlier conversations between officials from Pakistan and Iran. At the International Conference on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in Islamabad in April, Pakistan's Science Minister Khalid Hussain Magsi met with Iran's Deputy Science Minister Abolfazl Vahedi.
Examining strategies for fostering partnerships between academic institutions and research centres in both nations was the main goal of the meeting.
In January 2024, Pakistan's Higher Education Commission chairman Mukhtar Ahmed paid a visit to Iran's House of Innovation and Technology (iHiT).
"The main challenges in the development of Islamabad–Tehran relations have been overcome, and the two countries are ready to boost further ties in higher education, science, and technology," Ahmed said.
Moroever, Ahmed suggested academic staff exchanges and collaborative projects as ways for Pakistan and Iran to work together in scientific and technological domains.
"Iran is ready to cooperate with Pakistan in technological fields, including information and communication technology, agriculture, and health," said Iran's Vice Presidency for Science and Technology former head of the centre for international affairs Amir-Hossein Mir-Abadi.
