Motorists in Islamabad have received temporary relief as the Islamabad administration extends the deadline for mandatory M-Tag registration, a system used to digitally identify vehicles for controlled entry and improved traffic management.

A deadline extension has been announced in Islamabad by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner. Vehicle owners have until January 15, 2026, to put their M-Tags in place.

To begin with, the application deadline for the enforcement of the traffic signal timing change started on January 1, 2026; however, this deadline was postponed to accommodate the many citizens who have not yet participated in the registration process.

In view of the increasing number of applicants, the government has increased the registration arrangement at the major registration centre in the Parade Ground of Shakarparian. Additional counters have also been introduced to expedite the registration process.

Motorists are advised to make their way to the centre and renew their licences promptly since large numbers of people gather towards deadline time. This could result in delays.

The Islamabad authority is installing the M-Tag system to control the movement of vehicles in the capital. Vehicles which do not comply with the rule after the deadline imposed on January 15 will be taken strictly to task.
