The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) released a report on Sunday, revealing a severe water shortage in the ongoing month due to power outages at major pumping stations across the metropolitan city.

According to a KWSC spokesperson, the metropolitan city has faced a water shortage of 884 million gallons in the first 23 days of November due to continuous electricity outages.

In a statement, the spokesperson stated that repeated electricity suspensions by K-Electric (KE) disrupted operations at multiple pumping facilities.

Which pumping stations faced worst water shortage?

“The Dhabeji pumping station was hit hardest, with 132 hours and 20 minutes of power outages leading to a shortage of 424 million gallons, while the Dumlottee Wells recorded 146 hours of outages, resulting in 111 million gallons of lost water.”

Similarly, the North East Karachi pumping station alone faced a shortage of 335 million gallons, while smaller stations saw comparatively lower shortages: six million gallons at the Hub and Pipri stations and two million gallons at the Gharo station.

KWSC spokesperson urged KE to ensure a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply at all major pumping stations to prevent future disruptions.

“All possible steps are being taken to ensure a continuous water supply and to meet the needs of citizens,” said the spokesperson, adding that KWSC is maintaining close coordination with KE to reduce disruptions.

It should be noted that water supply across Karachi has returned to normal after power was restored, and further advancements are being implemented.
