Mazda has officially confirmed that the Iconic SP, a sports coupe inspired by the famous RX-7, is set to enter production. Unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, the Iconic SP captured fans’ attention with its sleek design and powerful performance potential.

The car combines Mazda’s legacy of sporty rotary engines with a forward-thinking hybrid system, blending traditional style with modern technology.

What makes Iconic SP special?

The Iconic SP is powered by a dual-rotor rotary engine, serving as a range extender for its electric drivetrain.

This setup delivers an impressive 365 horsepower, allowing Mazda to stay true to its performance heritage while supporting its environmental goals.

Moreover, the company is exploring the possibility of using carbon-neutral fuels, which could reduce emissions by up to 90%.

Reportedly, Mazda might even develop CO2-capturing technology, showing a commitment to sustainable sports cars.

According to Mazda’s design chief, Masashi Nakayama, the Iconic SP concept was created with production in mind from the very start. Every detail, from the car's shape to its interior design, was thoughtfully crafted for real-world driving.

Mazda’s Naohito Saga from the R&D strategy division explained that they researched practical aspects, like door positions and seating, to make the Iconic SP both functional and stylish.

Mazda’s new hybrid sports coupe

Mazda’s Iconic SP reflects the spirit of the RX-7, which holds a legendary place in sports car history. Although the company has not announced an official release date, fans are excited about this new model.

If Mazda can capture the thrill of the RX-7 while adding hybrid technology and sustainability, the Iconic SP promises to be worth the wait.
