Meta has introduced a subscription option for Facebook and Instagram users in the United Kingdom (UK), allowing them to use the platforms without personalised ads.

According to the company, the subscription model applies to users aged 18 and above. Those who choose to pay will avoid having their personal information used for personalised advertising purposes.

Meta’s spokesperson stated that users opting for ad-free services will pay a monthly fee; however, those who choose to continue using the platform with ads will not be charged.

UK web users will be charged £2.99 per month, while mobile phone users will have to pay £3.99 per month.

This subscription service will be introduced gradually in the coming weeks, while users who do not subscribe will continue to see ads.

The model is being presented in response to increasing scrutiny from European regulators, and it is expected that it may also be introduced in other countries.

Previously, Meta unveiled a similar service in the European Union, which was called a violation of the “Digital Markets Act”.

Meta said that personalised ads help users explore relatable products and services while letting businesses reach interested customers.

The company further stated that users who pay the specified fee will not see ads during videos, nor will their data be used for advertising.
