Meta announced on Thursday that it would discontinue Messenger desktop apps for Mac and Windows on December 15. According to Meta, users will be unable to log into Messenger and will be moved to the Facebook app.

On the Messenger help page, the company said: “If you’re using the Messenger desktop apps, you’ll get an in-app notification once the deprecation process begins.”

“You will have 60 days to use the Mac Messenger app before it is fully deprecated. Once the 60 days are over, you’ll be blocked from using the Mac Messenger app. We encourage you to delete the app since it will no longer be usable.”

Meta informed that it will begin sending in-app notifications to the users in the coming weeks to warn about the upcoming change.

How to secure storage on Messenger?

  • Users can easily secure their chat history by setting up a PIN before moving to the web version.
  • You can check if secure storage is enabled or not by clicking the settings icon above the profile picture and then selecting "Privacy & safety" > "End-to-end encrypted chats".
  • Then, you need to tap “Message storage” to check if “Turn on secure storage” is enabled or not.

Meta’s decision shows a broader strategy to merge communication tools and drive more traffic through its web ecosystem.
