Meta Platforms has announced to remove Facebook's Like and Comment buttons—once considered key metrics of reach and engagement—for third-party websites by February 10, 2026.
The decision came after the social media engagement increasingly started to take place within apps rather than across websites.
Meta added that the embedded widgets will “gracefully degrade,” meaning they’ll become invisible 0x0 pixel elements rather than breaking a site’s layout or causing errors. “This change only removes plugin content,” said the company.
“Website will still operate normally.” Publishers don’t need to take any action immediately, though they can opt to remove the code early for a clearer experience.
According to Meta platforms, the usage of these widgets has naturally declined over the years as the web has evolved.
According to the company, these tools are “an earlier era of web development,” which also underlines how it’s focused on building new tools that are of more value for developers and businesses.
Moreover, platforms like TikTok have reimagined what it means to interact with content, scrapping the "follow-and-like" method with algorithmically determined feeds that better suit the unique tastes of each user.
Other social apps soon followed suit, shifting attention away from external likes toward personalised, in-app interactions.
