Microsoft is giving a surprise extension to Windows 10 users for Microsoft 365 apps. The firm has said it will continue to support Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Windows 10 with security updates until October 2028.
A few months back, Microsoft announced it would no longer support these apps on Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, the final support date for the Windows 10 operating system. But now, the company has reversed its plan.
In a support post updated last week, Microsoft stated, "To assist with keeping you safe as you upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft will continue to offer security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 ends support."
That indicates security updates will now extend until October 10, 2028.
Even though the apps will continue to function, Microsoft still prefers users to switch to Windows 11.
It cautions that remaining on Windows 10 would ultimately result in performance and reliability problems with time.
Nevertheless, this extension provides users with additional time to upgrade their devices or make significant plans without urgency.
Microsoft is also providing Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 users who are not willing to switch immediately.
Furthermore, consumers can purchase an additional year of updates for $30, while businesses can acquire up to three years of ESUs.
