Microsoft is altering the way Word for Windows saves documents in a big update.

The tech giant is launching a feature that will save new documents automatically to OneDrive or the user's chosen cloud storage without requiring AutoSave to be enabled.

"We are modernising the way that files are created and stored in Word for Windows," said Microsoft's Office Shared Services and Experiences team Product Manager Raul Munoz.

You no longer need to worry about document storage because everything you create will be automatically saved to OneDrive or your chosen cloud location.

The goal of this update, which is presently being tested with Microsoft 365 Insiders, is to remove the concern that work will be lost and to provide seamless access to documents through web browsers or Android and iOS devices.

Instead of using the conventional numbered file name format, new documents will be saved with a date.

Users will have the option to designate default storage locations in the cloud for their documents, and if they would rather save files locally, they can choose not to use the auto-cloud save feature.

However, Microsoft's growing emphasis on cloud storage has raised concerns from some users.

As one commenter pointed out, "It appears that Microsoft adds a new step for users to access their files every few years. With the C drive clearly visible, things were much simpler in the past.
