In an effort to improve user security and privacy, WhatsApp has reportedly introduced new, shorter time limits for its “Disappearing Messages” feature.
According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging service is adding one-hour and 12-hour timers to its current 24-hour, 7-day, and 90-day options.
The new timers will give users more control over the privacy of their messages. This update was first seen in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.24.18.
The one-hour timer is specifically designed for sensitive data that needs to be quickly deleted, while the 12-hour timer balances convenience and privacy by giving users and recipients enough time to reply before messages vanish.
The release of these new timers will satisfy users who need greater control over the privacy of their messages.
Moreover, users can reduce the possibility of unwanted access by ensuring that the sensitive data is promptly erased with the help of the one-hour timer.
Notably, when users choose this option, WhatsApp might display a warning because messages might vanish before the recipient sees them.
On the other hand, the 12-hour timer is designed for users who need to coordinate short-term tasks or share relatively less sensitive information.
For those unversed, the Disappearing Messages feature, alongside a default 7-day timer, was first introduced in November 2020.
