In its recent push, anticipated to enhance performance and reduce app loading times, Google has announced Google TV and Android TV's transition from 32-bit to 64-bit apps.

This announcement was made on Google's official blog for Android app developers.

Google TV and Android TV to support 64-bit apps from August 2026

Fahad Durrani from Google TV stated: "Following other Android devices, Google TV and Android TV will soon support 64-bit app compatibility. These apps will deliver improved performance, quicker start times, and new viewing experiences on future 64-bit devices."

Starting in August 2026, all new Google TV and Android TV apps and updates will be required to include both 32-bit and 64-bit ARM support. This change is being introduced in line with Google gearing up for upcoming 64-bit TV devices, whose list entails a new Google TV Streamer launching in 2026.

The shift from 32-bit to 64-bit apps will lead to better performance, reduced lag, and faster loading times. It allows apps to use more RAM, which is beneficial for 4K, 8K, and AI functionalities.

For now, Google will maintain 32-bit compatibility, ensuring that users with older devices are not affected.

The higher-up from Google also explained that the tech juggernaut is not changing 32-bit support, and Google Play will continue to provide apps for 32-bit devices.

The new criterion for Google TV and Android TV apps indicates that apps with 32-bit native code will also need a 64-bit version.
