Apple is seeking to reverse a recent injunction that requires the company to allow developers to add external payment links within their iOS apps.
In its documents, Apple said the order is too broad and provides unfair advantages to Spotify, Microsoft, and Amazon, even if it was solely about Epic Games.
Apple said Epic never showed how allowing all developers to direct users to outside payment options without paying Apple's commission would remedy any alleged harm to Epic.
“Epic has lined up allies who want to use Apple’s technologies for free, but that has nothing to do with the Epic Games Store,” Apple wrote in its filing.
Currently, Apple has to allow all U.S. developers to link to external websites without any restrictions on the design of the link and without paying Apple any commissions. If the appeals court decides in favour of Apple, the company could change its App Store policies again and impose fees on purchases made outside the app.
The legal fight is part of the ongoing showdown between Apple and Epic Games about App Store commissions and broader implications for app developers and the digital marketplace.
