Microsoft Teams, one of the most widely used communication tools across offices, is preparing a new update that could automatically reveal an employee’s physical work location.
Microsoft's official 365 roadmap indicates that the update will notify when a user joins an organisation's office Wi-Fi and will automatically show that location in Teams.
This update is expected to roll out in December 2025 and is designed to help hybrid teams know who is working from the office and who is working remotely.
The update has also raised privacy and awareness issues among users who wish to manage their availability without knowledge of others.
For many professionals within the greater hybrid work culture around the world, it certainly feels invasive for those who work flexibly or for those that sometimes use shared and/or coworking or flexible workspaces.
Microsoft has not provided clarification of to what extent that data is shared, nor what visibility settings organisations might control. The location updates will be available globally to Windows and Mac users alike on launch.
The new location update comes on the heels of other productivity updates to Teams, such as saving chats for quick reference and customisable keyboard shortcuts coming soon.
Reportedly, the new location update will help companies that work with flexible schedules coordinate more efficiently and are asking for clearer data protection settings that would not allow data to be misused or sold by Microsoft or by the company holding the data.
