Elon Musk’s popular microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) appears to be encountering difficulty retaining its position in the competitive Android landscape, as new data from app intelligence provider Appfigures showed a steep decline in downloads.

In July 2025, X dipped 44% year-over-year in new installs on Google Play, while iOS downloads increased by 15%.

The downturn in question has also accounted for a considerable chunk of the overall 26% decrease in total X mobile downloads compared to the previous year.

The decline in Android installs is notable, particularly after the previous month's 49% dip. The X app on Android has been identified as problematic, with issues such as bugs and crashes.

Recently appointed head of product, Nikita Bier, known for his success with teen social apps, has indicated that X is committed to improving its Android experience. He announced plans to form an "Android Dream Team" to rebuild the app.

While X’s iOS app has enjoyed a record week for installs, the future of Android users remains uncertain.

X competitor Bluesky has also seen slower growth, with only 119,000 downloads in July, while Meta’s Threads is gaining traction among mobile users, potentially drawing away some of X’s audience.

X’s subscription revenue also seems to have followed in the footsteps of the app's Android downloads, as the platform earned $16.9 million in July, down from $18.8 million in March.
