Google is finally beginning to roll out the long-awaited temperature scheduling feature in the Google Home app for its popular Nest 3rd Gen and Nest E thermostats.
This update removes one of the last remaining major reasons why many users still use the old Nest app. For years, users relied on the Nest app to monitor and control their thermostats and temperature schedules.
Since the new Nest model launched in 2020, Google has shifted most of the thermostat functions to Google Home. Although older models, such as the Gen 3 and E thermostats, could be moved to the app, temperature scheduling was one noticeably absent feature, forcing users to continue using the old app just for the scheduling feature.
Earlier this year, in April, Google said it would finally bring scheduling to these thermostats sometime in 2025. The announcement came in conjunction with the much-delayed decision to drop support for many older models of thermostats, but luckily, the Gen 3 and E thermostat models were spared from a forced upgrade.
Notably, the scheduling page is finally rolling out for some users. The new feature will allow you to set temperatures for a certain time of day, select the sensors you want to use, and even set minimum fan runtimes per hour. A daily view of the schedule will make it easier to determine the entirety of your schedule.
However, there are a few downsides. Existing schedules from the Nest app will not automatically carry over, meaning users must recreate them manually. Early reports also suggest the feature may be glitchy, with schedules disappearing or changes not saving correctly. Google has not confirmed whether this is due to a staged rollout or ongoing migration work.
