WhatsApp on Thursday introduced a new feature for its iOS users, which allows them to send a voice message when a call is unanswered, providing a better chat experience on the platform.

WABetaInfo reported that the latest WhatsApp iOS update now features a ‘record voice message’ button on the call screen itself, which phases out the previous multi-step process of ending a call, navigating to the chat, and then sending an audio message.

If a voice call is not answered, iOS users can easily record a short voice note that is sent immediately with the missed call notification. This feature allows recipients to understand the purpose of the call without waiting for a separate text message.

"This feature simplifies reaching out to new contacts or businesses while maintaining confidence in the connection's authenticity. For verified business accounts, a checkmark appears next to their phone number, making it easier for users to distinguish official profiles from regular contacts," said WABetaInfo, adding that WhatsApp is also planning to extend this feature to video calls, enabling users to send short video messages if a video call is unanswered.

The latest update comes with four options, which include:

  1. Call button: Initiate individual or group calls with up to 31 participants.
  2. Scheduling button: Plan calls for a later time.
  3. Keypad button: Dial numbers directly, even if they are not saved on the device.
  4. Favourites section: Pin frequently contacted numbers for quick access.

A WhatsApp feature tracker said that the unified call hub and voice message options are currently available to a wide number of users who have installed the latest WhatsApp for iOS updates from the App Store, as the instant messaging platform continues to refine the hub to ensure that when a wider rollout occurs, more users can enjoy a stable, bug-free experience.
