Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast content from its mobile app to most modern TVs and streaming devices, including newer Chromecast models and the Google TV Streamer.

The change, effective December 1, 2025, means users can no longer control playback on these devices using their phones.

The reports first emerged on Reddit in mid-November after users noticed the “Cast” button had gone missing. Netflix has since updated its official support page to confirm the change. Instead, it guides viewers to use the TV's physical remote or the native Netflix app installed on their streaming device to browse and play content.

Some exceptions remain in place. Older Chromecasts with no physical remotes and TVs that have Google Cast built into them will still allow casting.

The feature, however, remains limited to ad-free subscribers, and users on Netflix's ad-supported plan cannot use casting on even these legacy devices.

Netflix customer service claims this move is intended to enhance the customer experience, but the company has not explained how removing a widely used feature accomplishes this.

The strategy follows a pattern seen in 2019 when Netflix ended AirPlay support for iOS devices, encouraging users to switch from mobile-to-TV protocols to native TV interfaces.
