Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has released the long-awaited messaging app called Chat, replacing X's old, traditional DM feature as a far better and modern messaging experience.
The new Chat app is also capable of voice and video calling, file sharing, and editing or deleting messages after they’ve been sent.
X has also introduced new features for strengthened privacy, including end-to-end encryption and notifications if someone screenshots a conversation.
X's Chat has been released on iOS and the web, and Android users will soon get the update.
It has also been confirmed by the platform that it is working on a voice memo option, like WhatsApp's voice note functionality, letting people send quick audio messages without having to place a call.
These updates have long been in the rumour mill, with a frenzy following the rollout of a test version of encrypted messaging earlier this year, although the feature was paused in May due to technical problems.
The latest, stable version of the app seems to have resolved many of those issues, as X’s help centre stated that encryption now extends to group chats and shared media, while some information — such as who is receiving a message — is still unencrypted.
The company assured that tools are also in the works to detect hackers' intrusion and help people verify the security and authenticity of their encrypted chats.
