Streaming services Netflix is going to drop support for select Apple TV devices soon.

The development came to light in an email Netflix users are receiving, with Netflix Help Center page stating that second and third generation models of Apple TV devices will not be able to support Netflix after July 31.

As netizens are in the grip of uncertainty as to whether the app will stop working or the company will stop rolling out app updates for Netflix, know that the latter is validated in light of what Netflix is reportedly stating in its email to some users.

Justifying the shutdown, Netflix says the decision was taken to ensure the “best possible Netflix viewing experience,” citing the devices' hardware to be outdated. The justification given by Netflix really has a point to ponder as the second-generation Apple TV was released 13 years ago, which Apple considers, alongside third generation, “vintage products.”

The inception of both the models of Apple TVs dates back to the release of tvOS, which is another sound justification for it does not even have access to the App Store. Moreover, these Apple TV variants have ended support over the years for early Apple TV hardware.

A somewhat similar step was taken by Google in 2021, as it pulled the plug on the YouTube app, with Crunchyroll hopping on the trend a couple of years ago.

Netflix not working on Apple TV

If Netflix is not working on your second or third generation Apple TV model, it's time to upgrade to newer models, like the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, as they remain intact from any impact of this decision.
