At a time when the US presidential elections — which took place in November 2024 — were inching closer, Netflix began losing subscribers after a report involving Netflix co-cofounder Reed Hastings surfaced.

Hastings was said to have made the biggest one-take donation to Kamala Harris' political campaign against Donald Trump in the 2024 US elections as a presidential candidate.

Netflix losing subscribers

Emerging only a few months ahead of the US elections, the development of a historical, biggest one-take funds transfer irked people of both realms: politics and technology, resulting in relentless outrage among Netflix users.

Having raised around $81 million for her political bout, Kamala Harris stood a chance to become the first female president of the US — but on the condition of winning.

Her biggest backers included well-reputed politicians like Biden and Barack Obama. These supporters and her remarkable political history consolidated her as a tough opponent against all the candidates.

As reported by Reuters, Hastings donated $7 million to a super PAC extending full support to Harris, prompting a substantial portion of Netflix's user base to quit and boycott the streaming platform.

Netflix stock drop amid Netflix cancellations

#CancelNetflix was trending on X (formerly Twitter), with dissented Netflix users posting screenshots of having cancelled their subscriptions. Netflix stocks also dropped slightly.
