In a surprising turn of events, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Thursday announced that the chip-making giant is planning to launch a quantum computing lab in Boston, US.

Nvidia's quantum computing lab will be used in collaboration with scientists from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Huang explained.

The Nvidia CEO brought to light the development at the company's annual software developer conference in San Jose, California, where the tech giant dedicated an entire day taking scientists' deliberation on quantum computing, according to Reuters.

The quantum computing initiative was reportedly taken into consideration by the company two months after Huang noted that quantum computers are 20 years away, a claim he retracted on Thursday while accompanying executives from quantum computing firms.

"This is the first event in history where a company CEO invites all of the guests to explain why he was wrong," Huang said.

Titled Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQR), the lab will have onboard well-established quantum firms including Quantinuum, Quantum Machines and QuEra Computing.

To the delight of those eager to learn more about the lab's operations and experiments, Nvidia's quantum computing centre will be fully functional later this year.
