Pakistan and China on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve cooperation in quantum technologies that would be a transformative opportunity for the country.
During a high level meeting in Islamabad, the agreement was signed in between China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and the Emerging Technologies Lab — a project Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP)-funded project — in the presence of Federal Minister for Planning, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, to strengthen cooperation in research, innovation, and capacity building in the field of quantum technologies.
This partnership will also promote joint initiatives, knowledge exchange, and the development of cutting-edge solutions in quantum computing.
On the occasion, the minister said: "China would assist Pakistan in establishing the National Centre for Quantum Computing, which would mark a major step forward in the country’s technological advancement.
"This partnership represents a new chapter in Pakistan-China scientific relations. Quantum technology is the future, and our cooperation with China will be a game changer.”
Iqbal emphasised that quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are the foundations of modern economies in Pakistan.
Pakistan is also planning to launch the Quantum Valley Project, envisioned as Pakistan's own 'Silicon Valley', to promote innovation and knowledge-based development.
"Investing in emerging technologies is essential to join the ranks of developed nations," Iqbal said that technological cooperation with China under CPEC Phase-II would drive industrial and modernisation, digital transformation, and human resource development in Pakistan.
