Pakistan has officially rolled out a redesigned passport with advanced security features to make it safer and more transparent for citizens.
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) announced on Wednesday that the printing of the redesigned passports has begun, equipped with AI technology and enhanced security features.
Pakistani passport new features
The DGIP, taking to X, stated that the purpose of the redesigned passports is to prevent forgery and misuse and update Pakistan’s travel documents in line with the modern international formats.
One of the most visible changes to the passport is that the new design will include the name of the holder’s mother in addition to their father on the holder data page.
The DGIP also stated that the visa pages now feature printed images of historical sites from every province of Pakistan to demonstrate the country’s cultural heritage.
However, the authorities say that both changes are following the principles of “modernity and harmonisation”. They emphasised that even with the changes, the overall layout of the travel document is still the same.
It is important to note that the printing of the new booklets has begun with formal approval from the Ministry of the Interior, signalling another phase in Pakistan’s modernisation of its passports.
Earlier, DG Passports, Mustafa Jamal Kazi, said that the department has a line of AI-driven passport printing devices that will create up to 300 passports per hour.
Pakistan procured six of those high-tech printers and integrated their platform with the National Database and Registration Authorisation (Nadra) system to alleviate processing times and ease backlogs.
