The announcement was made by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, at a press conference on Thursday. He said this was a “historic step” in the right direction for cleaner and sustainable transport in Pakistan.
He said the EV policy would promote the prime minister's vision for clean, affordable transportation as well as support domestic industry.
The EV policy has an important goal: 30% of all new vehicles made available for sale in Pakistan should be electric by 2030, which could save a total of 2.07 billion litres of fuel annually, saving the country nearly $1 billion in foreign exchange.
Moreover, the government's goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 4.5 million tonnes per year and, in turn, save $405 million a year in pollution-related health costs.
The government has earmarked Rs 9 billion in subsidies for 2025-26 to support this plan, which will get more than 116,000 electric bikes and 3,100 rickshaws on the road.
Additionally, 25% of these subsidies are set aside for women to provide them with safer and greener travel options.
A digital platform will be utilised to encapsulate the application and payment processes and to ensure accountability and transparency.
Furthermore, the policy also has provisions for the installation of 40 EV charging stations on the major highways, with one charging station every 105 km to allow for efficient travel in electric vehicles.
