The government of Pakistan is preparing to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) policy on 14 August in a major step to promote sustainable transportation.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) supports the policy, which attempts to promote the use of rickshaws and electric bikes throughout the nation.

The Ministry of Industries and Production sources claim that the policy will make it easier to distribute 116,000 e-bikes over a two-year period.

Moreover, it is anticipated that each rickshaw and electric bike will receive a sizable subsidy, increasing the public's access to these environmentally friendly vehicles.

The goal of the new policy is to improve on the lessons learnt from the previous EV policy, which failed to meet its lofty goals when just 50,000 two- and three-wheelers were introduced, despite a target of 500,000.

Similarly, only 200 electric buses went into service out of the 1,000 that were intended.

However, the government is hopeful that the new policy will help address these issues and promote the nation's electric vehicle adoption.

The policy will remain in effect until 2030, and the government intends to periodically review and modify its approach.

This effort to advance sustainable transportation in Pakistan is anticipated to gain momentum on August 14, Independence Day, when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to formally announce the launch of the new policy.
